In my last two trips to Italy, I stayed in the same apartment in Florence. Situated just beyond the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata, I would walk down Via dei Servi, which provided this amazing perspective of the Duomo. I took a number of pictures from both the piazza and the street, one ultimately that would provide the reference for this painting.
The actual execution of the painting would prove to be more troublesome than I would ever imagine. I wanted to convey the scale of the duomo and the buildings on either side towering above. As I would come to really love Via dei Servi for its energy, people, shops, etc., I felt compelled to render the details of that to the same degree as I painted the Duomo and that's when it all went south.
The painting took months with repaints galore to capture the detail of the buildings, only to be repainted over again (and again). It took a return trip to Florence to realize that the Duomo IS the painting. That for a larger painting, it needed to be the focus and the most detailed so that the eye is naturally drawn to it. Future smaller oil paintings will focus on the street itself.
The piece is 24"w x 36"h (61x91cm), 1.5" (4cm) deep, acrylic on canvas, sides painted. Signed lower right canvas side. Not ready to hang. Painting will be packed by artist and shipped free to customer.
